Sylvester Eriksson-Bique (University of Jyväskylä):

BiLipschitz Embeddings of Manifolds, Orbifolds and Metric Spaces

I will discuss some results on biLipschitz embeddings of manifolds, orbifolds and metric spaces. A biLipschitz embedding is a mapping from a given space \(X\) into another, usually, Euclidean space \(R^N\), which distorts distances by at most a constant factor. These mappings, and problems related to them, have found use in applications and have inspired some intriguing mathematics. I will attempt to give a gentle introduction to the general topic, and explain some of the obstacles to biLipschitz embeddability, as well as some of the methods that yield embeddings. The talk may be a bit of an outlier in the seminar, but I will strive to keep it accessible to a broad audience.
