The search for difference sets in groups of order 256

Difference sets in \(2\)-groups (groups of order \(2^{2n}\) for \(n\) an integer) and their associated designs have been a rich source of error correcting codes with nice properties. I will give a gentle introduction to difference sets, then I will describe some of the techniques used to construct difference sets in groups of order \(16\), \(64\), and \(256\). I will discuss a conjecture as well as the “evidence” for the conjecture.
