Office hours:  the official office hours for this class are following each lecture. However, you are very welcome to make an appointment and come ask questions, make comments, or just chat. You can also try showing up at my door anytime. But I might tell you to come back at another time if I am immersed into something else.

The tables of the law for this class are contained in the following document:
Syllabus

Homework:  math  is not a sport for bystanders. Getting your hands dirty  is important  to make sure that things sink in and you are not just spending a semester assisting to my creative rambling. Homework will be due pretty much every Friday (but see below for the up-to-date information). This semester I am going to be experimenting for the first time both with Canvas and WebWorks. Hopefully these will prove useful resources, but please bear with me as I learn the ropes. They say old dogs have a hard time learning new tricks...I don't consider myself an old dog yet, but sometimes technology makes me feel that way...

Homework will be both posted here and on Canvas

DUE-DATE:

Aug 28th
Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapter 1, and (at least) one question or comment about Chapter  2 of the book.
Sep 1st Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapter 4, Sections 1,2,4. Read Section 3 but don't think too deeply about it. We will come back to it later.
Sep 6th Webwork assignement "Vectors in Space".
Sep 8th Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapter 5, Section 1.

Ponder the following definition.

Definition of Vector Subspace. We say that a subset U of a vector space V is a subspace of V if U is itself a vector space under the inherited addition and scalar multiplication operations of V. Equivalently, U is a subspace of V if it is closed under addition and scaling (using the operations of V).

Answer the following questions:

1 - Is a straight line a vector subspace of the coordinatized plane?
2 - Is a straight line through the origin a vector subspace of the coordinatized plane?
3 - Is a parabola a vector subspace of the coordinatized plane?
4 - Is the set of polynomials of degree less than or equal to 5 a vector subspace of the vector space of polynomials?
5 -
Is the set of polynomials of degree greater than or equal to 5 a vector subspace of the vector space of polynomials?
Sep 11th Webwork assignement "Vector Spaces".

Think about: "what are the key points to take away from Worksheets 1 and 2"? Be prepared to contribute to a discussion in class.

Sep 13th Answer questions 1, 2, 3 at the end of Worksheet 2, planes & more.
Sep 15th Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapter 6 of the book.
Sep 22th  Webwork assignement "Linear Transformations".
Sep 25th Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapter 9 of the book.
Sep 27th  Webwork assignement "Subspaces and Spans".
Sep 29th Write solutions to Problems on Worksheet 3 "Linear functions"  (only problems, not the discussions).
Oct 2nd Write down Discussion 4 on Worksheet 3 "Linear functions".

Write solutions to Problems on Worksheet 4 "Bases"
Oct 4th Write down (at least) one question or comment about Chapters 10 and 11 of the book.
Oct 6th Webwork assignement "Linear Independence"
Oct 9th Webwork assignement "Basis and dimension"
Oct 18th Write down (at least) one question or comment about "Isomorphisms: annotated".
Oct 20th Write solutions to the problems highlighted in green in "Isomorphisms: annotated".
Oct 23rd Write down (at least) one question or comment about "Linear functions (again): annotated"
Oct 25th Write solutions to the problems highlighted in green in "Linear functions (again): annotated"
 Oct 30th Webwork assignement "KernelRangeNullityRank"
Nov 3rd Write down (at least) one question or comment about "Matrix multiplication: annotated ". Answer problem  2.21 on page 234.
 Nov 29th
Write down (at least) one question or comment about "Determinants: annotated "
 Dec 1st
Write solutions to the problems highlighted in green in "Determinants: annotated". If you cannot see the colors, they are the following problems: 1.8, 2.13, 2.15, 2.18, 2.20
Dec 4th
Write down (at least) one question or comment about "Worksheet 6: the determinant ". Answer Problem 1 on the worksheet.

Exams: There will be two midterms and a final.  These dates might change, so please check occasionally. If dates change I will also mention it in class, of course.
