Exam I Review.  Preparation notes: Covers 13.1-13.7, 14.1-14.3. Review the following topics:
13.1: distance formula, ecuation of a sphere
13.2: operations with vectors: addition, multiplication by a scalar,  standard basis {i,j,k}
13.3: dot product: definition, properties, angle between two vectors, a and b orthogonal if and only if a . b = o
13.4: cross product: definition, properties: cross product is orthogonal to both vectors,  length equal to the aria of the paralellogram, vectors are parallel if and only if cross product is zero.
13.5: parametric equations of the line, vector equation of a line, vector equation of a plane, scalar equation of a plane,  parallel planes, distance from a point to a plane.
13.6: quadric surfaces: standard form, traces, graphical representation.
13.7: cylindrical and spherical coordinates: conversion from one type of coordinates to another one of them; conversion of a given equation of a surface from one tipe of coordinates to another one.

Exam II Review: Chapter 15

-drawing contour maps of level curves;
-partial derivatives and chain rule trees
-tangent planes, linearization of a given function: linear approximation of f at (a,b); the differential dz
-gradients &  applications: directional derivative (Du), the gradient vector,  tangent planes to level surfaces, normal line, meaning of the gradient vector;
-finding local & absolute maxima and minima, as well as determining which, if any critical points are saddle points.
