Course information

Text: We will cover roughly Chapters 12-16 of Thomas' Calculus, with all suggested homework (below) coming from the Second Custom Edition for Colorado State University (identical to the 13th edition, for our purposes), written by Thomas, Weir, and Hass. Also, MyMathLab might be packaged with the book if you buy the book through the CSU Bookstore. We will not be using MyMathLab as part of the course, but you are welcome to use it on your own if you would like. Previous editions of the book have very similar content, but a few of the problem numbers might be different; you are welcome to buy an older version if you want, but it's on you to make sure you are trying the correct problems.

Office hours:

All office hours are organized by the Calculus Center but held in TILT Great Hall, on the second floor of the TILT building. The schedule of available office hours is available here. Please note that you are welcome to attend any Math 261 office hour, not just the two offered by your instructor.

Tutoring options: Aside from office hours (above), there are three options for getting help outside of class.

  1. The Calculus Center can assist you with remedial topics (trig, Calc 1, Calc 2).
  2. TILT offers tutoring for Calc 3 Sunday-Thursday, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.
  3. See the Math Department tutoring page here for private tutors to hire.

Exam review sheets

These review sheets for Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, and the Final Exam spell out the range of topics you are expected to know. Also, here's the formula sheet that will appear as page 2 of your final exam.


Course notes

During Summer 2015, Josh Maglione (a GTA and frequent 261 instructor) was supported by the Department of Mathematics and TILT to put together some course notes, primarily for the benefit of future instructors. We have posted them here as they might also be of interest to students.

Please note that this is a work in progress and that there is no guarantee that instructors will exactly follow these notes. However, these notes could be handy as you try to discern what topics we emphasize and also for a rapid review of various sections, e.g., near exam time.

Suggested Homework

These are only suggested problems; you do not need to turn them in. The exam problems will be similar to those in the suggested homework, so it is well worth your time to try these problems. We will not cover exactly one section per day (see above), so just keep trying problems until you have not yet seen the appropriate material.

There are many problems for some sections, probably more than you need to achieve mastery. If you feel you have mastered the topics in some section, I suggest skimming the remaining problems for anything you misssed rather than slogging away at problems that you already know how to do. It's up to you to decide how best to spend your time!
