NoCo Math Oval

The Department of Mathematics is hosting a new outreach program called NoCo Math Oval, thanks to faculty members Dan Bates and Patrick Shipman. NoCo Math Oval is basically a math circle for local middle and high school students. Bates and Shipman worked with several area parents and teachers to get this program off the ground. There has been a great deal of enthusiasm from the participants following their two initial meetings. Parents and teachers have provided much-appreciated help in the form of logistical support and snacks.

The current program structure is rather flexible. The participants meet in TILT 221 auditorium for a couple of hours on Saturday about once a month. So far Bates and Shipman have talked about geodesics and knot theory, following by challenging problems related to our Math Day competition. The upcoming meeting agenda includes talks from members of the community, besides teachers, who simply enjoy math. For example, a local recreational math enthusiast, will talk on the Monty Hall problem and the potato curve problem. Future talks encourage a variety of math flavors. The goal of the new program is to build a community of students who can enjoy exploring math together, beyond the usual curriculum. Competitions will likely play a role as the group grows, but currently, this is not the main focus.

So to those campus faculty, alumni and community members interested in math issues, we encourage your participation. If you are willing to give up an hour or two on some Saturday to talk about some math-ish topic appropriate for middle and high schoolers OR if you have a child or student interested in attending the meetings, please contact Dr. Bates by emailing him at
