PACe PROGRAM:  A MORE DETAILED VIEW

PACe students are self-directed in their use of the learning resources and, with some restrictions, their schedule for taking proctored unit examinations.

Several of the learning resources described in the previous section are accessible nearly 24 hours/day, and the remainder are available about 45 hours each week (during the FA & SP terms).   Students taking minicourses choose when and how to use the online course materials and tutors.

To complete a minicourse, students must work through a sequence of carefully designed required assignments and review exams, and then demonstrate competence with the course material on a sequence of proctored unit examinations. The units must be completed and passed in order.   Unit exams can be taken in the PACe Testing Center in the Weber Building any time the PACe Center is open, and may be repeated as many times as the student needs to achieve the scores required by course policies or desired by the student.

The PACe minicourses are self-directed, but not self-paced.  Students are required to show they are regularly and consistently engaged with the course.  Students have a minimum weekly progress requirement.   Students who fail to meet this weekly requirement lose their eligibility to use the PACe Testing Center during the closing weeks of the semester.

We use the PACe instructional website to provide detailed, individualized feedback to students concerning exam performance, course progress, and deadlines.   Students automatically see a report of their weekly progress credits each day that they log in.   In this way we minimize miscommunication about the weekly progress requirement and deadline dates.

User's Examination    Each semester students are required to pass a User's Examination.   This short exam is intended to ensure that each student is familiar with the learning resources, procedures, and policies of the PACe Program.

The User's Examination is based on The Guide to the PACe Program.  A new edition of this guide is prepared for each semester.   The current Guide provides detailed information about learning resources, exam procedures, grading policies, and term specific information such as deadline dates, and progress requirement deadlines.  The Guide can be viewed from the CSU Mathematics Department web site (go to www.math.colostate.edu and click on PACe Program).

PACe Orientation  Each fall and spring semester, orientation sessions are held during the first week of classes.  The orientation introduces students, parents, and faculty to the PACe Program.   All students taking PACe minicourses are expected to attend an orientation session, and are sent an email announcing the orientation schedule.

Registration   To take MATH 117, MATH 118, MATH 124, MATH 125, and MATH 126, register for section 001.  (Section 550 is for credit earned from the CSU Mathematics Placement Examination.)   Students must register for all of the minicourses they wish to take during the semester by the initial add deadline (before the sixth day of classes).
