Deformations, obstructions, and the virtual fundamental class

I will discuss the deformation theory underlying the construction of the virtual fundamental class, with as much geometric motivation as possible.  Then I will explain some basic means of manipulating virtual fundamental classes and illustrate them with a few applications in Gromov-Witten theory.
