DATE: May 5 2005 TIME: 12:10 in Weber 117 SPEAKER: Jeremy Muskat (CSU) TITLE: Determining congruence zeta functions. ABSTRACT: Zeta functions are mathematical objects that appear in many different disciplines of mathematics. Their applications may be viewed in analysis, number theory, and geometry to name just a few. This talk will focus on determining congruence zeta functions of projective hypersurfaces. This will be accomplished by one of three methods. Using Jacobi sums, the Weil conjectures, or by comparison to the smooth form of the hypersurfaces.
