In this talk I will review
several different mechanisms believed to be responsible for burst-like
phenomena in fluid mechanics. These mechanisms have one thing in common:
they are all fundamentally low-dimensional. I will indicate how these mechanisms
arise in particular fluid systems, and their observable consequences. I
will not discuss intermittency in turbulence.
