There are several reasons for organizing a center for interdisciplinary research around mathematics and statistics:
- Mathematics and statistics form a natural core for many interdisciplinary activities in science and engineering as these provide the language and techniques common to most sciences
- The potential range of impact of significant progress in mathematical and statistical research is enormous in all fields of science and engineering
- Mathematical and statistical research presents a very cost-effective investment as measured by a high rate of return for a relatively meager investment
- The establishment of CIMS will be a critical factor in the successful pursuit of the goals of roadmap outlined in the Discovery Team Final Report
