An interconnected set of algorithms is presented for the simulation of two-phase flow in porous media achieving more than two orders of magnitudes acceleration. The methods combine: an adaptive operator splitting technique; adaptive meshing; efficient block preconditioning; and a localized artificial diffusion strategy for stabilization. The accuracy and efficiency of the approach is demonstrated through numerical experiments for three types of flows in heterogeneous porous media, including an advection dominated flow and flow involving capillary transport.
