David Aristoff's homepage Title: Simulating Cilia in Stokes Flow

Abstract: This talk will examine simulating cilia in two and three dimensions in a variety of geometries. An explicit formula for Stokes flow driven by a singly-periodic array of regularized forces in two dimensions near a planar wall will be developed in order to investigate the dynamics of periodic arrays of cilia in two dimensions. We will consider a slight modification of an existing integrative model of ciliary beating that incorporates some of the force generating internal mechanisms. This ciliary model will then be used to look at dynamics in three dimensions without periodicity. Finally, we'll investigate cilia on spherical geometries with applications to single celled organisms such as Volvox and Chlamydomonas.
