Posting a math paper to arXiv
Here are Henry's tips for posting a math paper to arXiv!
- Beforehand, choose a primary, and a secondary category or two if you so choose, at https://arxiv.org/archive/math. You must add the primary category at the very beginning when submitting to arXiv, and will have the option to add any secondary categories right before submitting. So long as you associate a .edu email address to your arXiv account (which is advisable if possible), then you do can post to any category without first receiving an endorsement.
- You will also have to select a license. I usually select arXiv's "standard" one.
- Remove most comments from tex file; the source code is publicly available when you post to arXiv!
- If the paper is in the formatting for a particular journal, you probably want to remove that style file and replace it with more standard LaTeX paper formatting.
- You'll add the LaTeX.tex source code file, and all the image files.
- For the bibliography, you do not add the .bib file, and instead add the .bbl file.
- If arXiv has any problems compiling your paper, search (via "control-F") for "error" in the compilation logs.
- After you submit the paper, you will receive a confirmation email. You should forward this email to your coauthors, and attach the arXiv PDF (which they can't access at this stage).
- The submitted paper will appear on arXiv a few days later. You will have a couple of days to edit the arXiv submission before it appears (and without delaying the appearance date).
- After you get the confirmation email that the post has appeared, forward the email to your coauthors in order to allow them to "claim ownership". To "claim ownership", log on to arXiv, go to the "My account" page, scroll to the bottom, select "claim ownership with a password", and then enter the paper id (such as 1003.7643) and password (such as jvq87) from the confirmation email.
