Introduction
This is the first part of a year-long detailed study of calculus, both
in one variable and many. At the end of this year, students should have
a deep understanding of concepts introduced in earlier courses, as
well as familiarity with more advanced topics.
Roughly speaking, this semester will cover the first four chapters of
the textbook: point set topology; differentiation; the implicit
function theorem; and integration.
Prerequisites
The only official prerequisite for this course is Math 369, although
a fluency with introductory calculus will make this course much more
tractable and rewarding.
Logistics:
- Textbook: Advanced Calculus, Gerald B. Folland.
- MWF 9-9:50 ENGRG E103
- Office hours:
- Wednesday 10-11
- Thursday 2-3
Requirements and other expectations
As in any other 400-level class, you will need to work both diligently
and creatively.
- Homework 30% Homework will be assigned weekly, and due on
Fridays at the beginning of class. No late homework will ever be
accepted. Your work must be neat, and the pages stapled, in order
to be graded. While you are encouraged to work in groups, the
written work you hand in must be your own.
- Midterm 30% There will be a midtern on Monday, October 10
in class. No makeup exam will be given.
- Final exam 40% The final exam will be on Monday, December
12, 4:10PM-6:10PM. Again, no makeup exam will be given. You must pass
the exam in order to pass the course.
Help
This is challenging material; it's fully expected
that sometimes you'll need a little help. Unless specifically
noted, you're encouraged to work with other students in the class.
(Please observe that the work you actually turn in must be your own.)
Questions directed to j.achter@colostate.edu
