My computer doesn't have Microsoft Word, though. OpenOffice, which I do have, typically does a good job of importing such files, but it seems to have maximal troubles dealing with mathematics.

This means that you might want to try exporting to a more open document format, or even PDF. I haven't experimented with this; if you have, let me know, and I'll post the results here. In the meantime, you could try using the TOM document conversion service, which in the relevant case will try to use wvWare.
