Placement Information for Prospective & Incoming Students
Every degree program at Colorado State University requires a
minimum of 3 credits in mathematics for graduation. The Colorado State
University Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) has been developed by the
Department of Mathematics to determine a student's readiness for college-level
mathematics at Colorado State.
All first-time freshmen and transfers who have not completed a
transferable college-level mathematics course are required to take the
MPE.
- Newly admitted freshmen who expect to receive college credit for
a mathematics course from Advanced Placement, concurrent enrollment
in a college-level course, or completion of the International
Baccalaureate program should visit with an admissions representative,
an academic adviser, or contact the Department of Mathematics to
determine whether it is in your best interest to take the MPE.
- Transfer students who are admitted with a college-level mathematics
course in progress should visit with their academic adviser to determine
whether the MPE will be necessary.
Students are strongly encouraged
to
complete the MPE remotely (using a home computer) before
participating in an Orientation and Registration Program.
- Placement exams are not a regularly scheduled part of the on-campus
Orientation programs. Students who have completed the MPE in advance
of Orientation will be better prepared to plan an optimal schedule of
classes with their adviser during Orientation.
- Registration in a mathematics course during the first semester on
campus may not be required for specific degree programs, but more course
options may be available to students with MPE results demonstrating
readiness for a college-level mathematics course.
- Direct admission to some competitive programs and registration in
courses after 60 credits may require mathematics during the first
semester on campus.
- To qualify for course credit by exam, you must take the MPE on
campus in the proctored PACe Testing Center (Weber 138).
Students may
take the MPE remotely ONE TIME.
A ONE-TIME $15 exam fee is charged to the student' account the
first time the MPE is taken.
Payment of this fee is expected even if the student subsequently
chooses not to attend Colorado State University after taking the
exam. Students are not charged for additional attempts of the
Mathematics Placement Exam.
We strongly recommend that students prepare
before attempting this exam.
Students must have an eID (electronic IDentification) in order to take
the MPE remotely.
Shortly after students apply for admission to Colorado State University,
the Office of Admissions mails instructions for using a secure site to
establish an eID. If you have forgotten your eID, use
I forgot my ePassword for help. If you need assistance establishing
your eID, please contact the Office of Admissions at
admissions@colostate.edu
or (970) 491-6909.
During the academic year, the MPE is available remotely during specific
dates and times.
The admission term for which a student has applied determines the exact
dates of availability. The window of available dates closes prior to the
start of the term for which you have applied.
Log in to the
MPE website
using your eID to display the exact dates during which you are eligible
to take the MPE remotely.
NOTE: The remote MPE is not typically available between semesters. We
use this time to perform required maintenance on our system.
MPE results are available immediately after completing the exam.
In addition:
- Placement results are sent to the University's records system every
evening at 10pm MST.
- Placement results for exams that are completed after 10pm MST are sent
to the University's records system at 10pm MST on the next day.
- You can re-check your placement results at any time by logging in
to the
remote MPE site.
- Applicants who complete the MPE remotely to satisfy the admission
requirement in mathematics must notify the Office of Admissions that a
successful result has been achieved so that results can be matched with
the application for admission.
The remote MPE is found at
