Colorado State University Department of Mathematics

  MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAMINATION

Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE)
The MPE is given on a "walk-in" basis ( when classes are in session) in the IMP Testing Center (Weber 138) according to the table shown below. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice and multiple choice-multiple response questions and covers topics in College Algebra, Numerical & Analytic Trigonometry, and Logarithms & Exponential Functions. The exam period is two hours and twenty minutes long. Calculators are allowed, but you must use a calculator provided by the IMP Testing Center. Reference materials may not be used during the exam.

The MPE may be taken twice on campus in a proctored setting. Exam results are available immediately. Incoming students have an additional opportunity to take the exam remotely prior to their term of admission.

Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) Exam
The ELM Exam is given on a "walk-in" basis in the IMP Testing Center (Weber 138, when classes are in session) according to the table shown below. The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions and has a 90 minute time limit. The ELM Exam covers the intermediate algebra topics considered prerequisite for all of the entry-level mathematics courses offered at CSU (M CC117, M CC130, M CC133, M CC135).

ELM Exam results are available immediately. Calculators and reference materials are not permitted on this exam.

PLEASE NOTE: the ELM Exam will be discontinued after May 8, 2006.

Which exam should I take?
All entering freshmen are required to take the Math Placement Exam. The MPE is waived for students who either scored 3,4, or 5 on an Advanced Placement Calculus Exam (either AB or BC), or have transfer credit in a math course at the level of college algebra or above. Transfer students who have not transferred any mathematics courses to CSU are encouraged to begin with the MPE. Students who are not successful with the MPE are directed to either retake the exam, or to focus on the ELM Exam instead.

Is there a fee?
An exam fee of $15 is automatically charged to your student account the first time you take either the Math Placement Exam or the Entry Level Math Exam. This is a one time fee, and you will not be charged again for additional attempts of the MPE or ELM Exams.

What do you need to bring?
For either exam, you need to bring a #2 pencil and identification that includes your photo and student ID number. Currently enrolled students are required to bring their CSU ID card as identification.
