The passing of Margaret “Peggy” Magnus

Professor Don EstepThe Department of Mathematics was deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of Margaret "Peggy" Magnus. Mrs. Magnus was the wife of former faculty member Arne Magnus who passed away in 1991. Mrs. Magnus established the "The Arne Magnus Lecture Fund" in 1992 as a memorial to her beloved husband, Dr. Arne Magnus. The Magnus Lectures are delivered annually at the department of mathematics in honor of Dr. Arne Magnus, our colleague and friend for 25 years. Annually, the department invites outstanding researchers and expositors to the campus to deliver a series of lectures at a range of levels for the campus, the college, and our department. The lectures are supported by the Arne Magnus Lecture Fund and the Albert C. Yates Endowment in Mathematics.

Below is Mrs. Magnus' obituary, submitted by her son John Magnus:

Margaret "Peggy" Magnus died peacefully on August 22, 2014 in her home in Snohomish, WA. Peggy was born Margaret Godby Hope on May 12, 1925, the daughter of John and Margaret Hope of Clayton, Missouri. She was the beloved wife of Arne Magnus (originally from Oslo, Norway) from January 20, 1950 until his death in October 18, 1991. Survivors include her three children Margaret H. Magnus of Snohomish, Paul V. Magnus of Snohomish and John B. Magnus of Milford, NH as well her five grandchildren Rachel Nizhnikov of Seattle, WA, Arne Nizhnikov of Snohomish, Anne and John F. Magnus of Snohomish and Paul J. Magnus of Milford. Peggy was raised in Missouri where she attended Mary Institute and Washington University, earning Bachelors and Master's degrees in Mathematics. She called Fort Collins her home, having lived there in the same house from 1966 to 2013. She was a loving mother, avid bridge player, needlework artisan, world traveler, and proponent of Norwegian culture. The family will be holding a memorial service in Fort Collins at the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ on December 1st at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donation should be given to the Arne Magnus Scholarship (https://advancing.colostate.edu/CNS/MATH/GIVE) or to your favorite charity.
