11th Annual Pikes Peak Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conference

Professor Don Estep

The 11th Annual Pikes Peak Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (PPRUMC) was held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. The focus of this annual conference is to give undergraduate mathematics students an opportunity to present their research and expository projects in a professional setting.

Key note speaker: Dr. Stefan Erickson, Colorado College Title: Cryptography in the Computer Age: How to Use Number Theory To Take Over The World To view his talk or PDF of his presentation, go to:

Several undergraduate and graduate students attended the annual PPRUMC (Pikes Peak Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Conference) during Valentine's Day weekend—an obvious expression of their love for mathematics. Mary Pilgrim was the faculty representative for the Department of Mathematics. Francis Motta was on a panel: Beyond an Undergraduate Mathematics Degree. He described his experiences after getting his undergraduate degree in mathematics and the advantages of pursuing his PhD. John Bloemker presented "The Impact of an 8th Grade Algebra Summer Camp on 9th Grade Geometry Performance." He has been working closely with Mary Pilgrim to design an innovative K-12 curriculum. Rachel Popp, Jason Jaeckel, Amanda Rose, and Christie Burris also presented their ongoing research: "An exploration of Methods of Solving the Combinatorial Game Flood-it." They began this project after members of Math Club became interested in the mathematical structure of the game. Everyone had a great time presenting and appreciated the opportunity to engage with the broader mathematics community.
