BertiniReal: Software for finding real curves and surfaces

A fundamental problem when solving polynomial systems is the computation of real solutions, especially real curves, surfaces, etc. It is much simpler to find the complex solutions. Dan Brake (Vakhtang Putkaradze's final PhD student before moving to Alberta) spent 2013 as a postdoc with Prof. Dan Bates, working with collaborators at NC State, Notre Dame, and General Motors to develop methods and software for finding such real solutions. As a result of their work, given a polynomial system and a complex solution set X of dimension 2 or lower, BertiniReal will compute a particular type of cellular decomposition of all real solutions in X (points, curves, and/or surfaces). Even better, it will output an STL file that can be connected to a 3D printer, so you can input a polynomial system and receive a 3D model as output! This work was partially supported by AFRL and DARPA.
