Department of Mathematics - College of Natural Sciences Colorado State University

Sarah Hamilton, a recent grad visits the department

Professor Don EstepSarah Hamilton, a Vermont native, graduated from Colorado State University in 2012 with a PhD in Mathematics under the advisement of Dr. Jennifer Mueller. Her project involved both theoretical and computational aspects of a high-contrast, non-invasive imaging modality called Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). During her time at CSU, Sarah was a member of the Program in Interdisciplinary Mathematics, Ecology, and Statistics (PrIMES) and a mentor for the multi-departmental program Flexible and Extendable Scientific Undergraduate Experience (FEScUE). Upon receiving her degree, she accepted a postdoctoral research position at the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Helsinki in Finland, supported by the Strategic Centre for Health and Well-being (SalWe). There she works with mentor Dr. Samuli Siltanen, Professor of Industrial Mathematics, has begun consulting for GE Healthcare, presented her scientific work at conferences around the world, and built up an international network of collaborators.

During January-February of 2014, Sarah returned to sunny CSU to work with Dr. Mueller on research collaborations involving experimental EIT data taken on the ACE1 EIT system in Dr. Mueller's new lab. In the final months of her postdoc, Sarah looks forward to continuing her research in Helsinki and presenting her work at the SIAM Imaging Science 2014 conference in Hong Kong, and the Inverse Problems: Imaging and Modeling Conference in Fethiye, Turkey. This fall, Sarah will begin her new tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is very excited to be part of such an interdisciplinary team at Marquette and looks forward to continuing her work in a city filled with biomedical imaging opportunities!
