ALUMNI NEWS... Zach Meier

Ken Klopfenstein

Zach Meier graduated summa cum laude from Colorado State University in 2006 with a major in mathematics, concentration in actuarial science, and a minor in statistics. Zach came to CSU as a 2002 Boettcher Scholar, and as a student was active in the University Honors Program, a student ambassador, a preview orientation leader, a member of the CSU club baseball team, and played many intramural sports. His senior honors thesis titled "From the Classroom to the Test: A Study Guide for the First Society of Actuaries Examination" is in its third published edition and has proven to be a valuable resource for many candidates taking Exam P/1 (Probability). Since 2007, Zach has taught a section of MATH 495 preparing students to pass Exam P/1, and a remarkable 72% of his students taking the exam in the past 5 years have passed the exam (industry pass rates are generally around 40%).

Just three years after graduation, Zach earned his Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation in 2009 and is also a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). He works as a senior manager in financial risk management for a life insurance company in Denver. His primary responsibilities include running the company's hedge programs and managing the company's available capital, required capital, and shareholder dividends.

On a personal note, Zach lives in Denver with his wife, Allison, and their two children, Caleb and Abby. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys rooting for the CSU Rams, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs, Denver Broncos, and his kids' soccer teams: the Super Sharks and Little Birdies. He also coaches his son's tee ball team and enjoys the challenges of teaching 12 hyperactive 4-and 5-year-olds the great game of baseball.
