24th Annual Math, Science Technology Day Was a Hit!

On Wednesday, October 8, 2014, CSU hosted the 24th annual El Centro MST Day events. Over 250 area 4th graders attended the events.

In 1990, the late Dr. Sharon Bartels dreamed of a program that would bring local underserved children to CSU for a fun-filled day to show them that college is something worth pursuing. Since then, the program has grown to include exciting STEM content, admissions information, CSU student mentoring, and cultural programming.

The Mathematics Department ran four workshops, this year (Math in Motion, Mayan Math, Fun with Fibonnaci and Twisty Turny Knots). The kids had a blast—in addition, the leaders and helpers and volunteers had just as much fun. Special thanks from the planning committee to all Math faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate leaders who coordinated/lead the workshops and exemplified the Department in a positive way! Dr. Kennedy, Melissa Adkins, Farrah Sadre-Marandi & Steve Ihde, Dr. Shipman have been invaluable in helping out with this event for the past several years--THANK YOU! Thank you, Katy Sieviec, for your time and talent in taking photos of the event.

This year, the lunch time entertainment featured a local muralist by the name of Armando Silva. He is a lively entertainer who kept the fourth graders full attention for the duration! He is not only a great artist, but a wonderful entertainer. His artwork (a mural of Einstein and one of a Ram) will soon be on display for the entire College & University to enjoy.

A great time was had by all and we look forward to the event, next year!
