Dr. Mary Pilgrim joins the department of mathematics faculty

Workshop

This fall semester of 2013, Dr. Mary Pilgrim joined our Department of Mathematics as an Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education. Dr. Pilgrim received her MS degree in Mathematics from Colorado State University in 2003. In 2010 she earned her PhD in Education and Human Resource Studies with Interdisciplinary Specialization in Mathematics Education. Dr. Pilgrim earned her PhD under the guidance of Gene Gloechner and Paul Kennedy. Her thesis was entitled "A concept for Calculus Intervention: Measuring Student Attitudes Towards Mathematics and Achievement in Calculus." Her dissertation was of a mixed methods design, which has contributed to her experience in both qualitative and quantitative research. Her doctoral work focused on increasing success for college students in Calculus I and continues to work on efforts to improve success for CSU students in MATH 160.

Dr. Pilgrim's current research interests lie within Mathematics Education and includes: improving success rates in college Calculus courses; the use of multiple pedagogies with pre-service Mathematics teachers; the use of technology and interdisciplinary content in Calculus; diversity issues in STEM education; development of curriculum that addresses the Common Core State Standards; student attitudes toward Mathematics; alternative instruction for exceptional students; and improving retention in lower-level college Mathematics courses. In addition, Mary is currently working with Patrick Shipman on creating meaningful and integrated curriculum at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown, CO.

Dr. Pilgrim was a visiting assistant professor at Oregon State University in 2011-12. She joined CSU in 2012-13 as a Calculus Facilitator. Mary and her husband Michael were happy to relocate back to Fort Collins on a permanent basis. They both enjoy winter and summer indoor/outdoor activities, particularly hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. In addition, Mary is in the Fort Collins African Drum and Dance performance troupe. A very familiar face around our department, Dr. Pilgrim's office is in 111 Weber.
