Math - Science - Tech (MST) Day at Colorado State University

On October 3, 2012 Colorado State University hosted the 22nd Annual MST Day (Mathematics, Science, and Technology Day.) In 1990, the late Dr. Sharon Bartels dreamed of a program that would bring local underserved children to CSU for a fun-filled day to show them that college is something worth pursuing. Since then, the program has grown to include exciting STEM content, admissions information, CSU student mentoring, and cultural programming.

This year four local elementary schools from Poudre School District ascended on campus bringing large groups of students—in the neighborhood of 250 fourth graders. Schools participating included: Putnam Elementary, Irish Elementary, Harris Elementary, and Laurel Elementary—each with a significant percentage of Hispanic students in attendance. A total of three sessions were held, with 8-10 different presentation topics for students to choose from in each session. Mathematics presentations included three options for the young students: Mayan Math presented by graduate students Liz Lane-Harvard and Melissa Swager; Fun with Fibonacci, presented by Lori Ziegelmeier and Steve Ihde; and Math in Motion presented by Professor Paul Kennedy and his undergraduate NOYCE Scholars. A special thanks goes out to Annette Gonzales, for assisting with administrative duties and volunteering as tour guide for Mathematics participants in the Weber building.

This is a yearly activity which is hosted by El Centro, in conjuction with (and support of): the College of Natural Sciences, the Environmental Learning Center, the College of Engineering, including the STEM center, the Access Center & many other University departments and units. The planning committee is hoping to expand our list of supporters as well as the topics covered and to increase the number of days these students can visit CSU, throughout the year.
