Professor Darel Hardy received his B.S. in 1962, M.S. in 1964 and Ph.D. in 1967, all from New Mexico State University. He joined the Colorado State University mathematics faculty in 1967.

Professor Hardy has been involved in outreach to high schools, the introduction of calculators and computers into the mathematics curriculum, and other curriculum development projects. He was the originator and director of the first Colorado State University Math Day in 1977. In addition to his duties in the Department of Mathematics, he is also a Program Coordinator for the Center for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (CSMATE).

Professor Hardy's research interests lie in the area of algebraic semigroups, which can be applied to the theory of machines and languages.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS COMPUTING

The Department of Mathematics has made significant progress recently in upgrading the computing environment of its students. The Department has actively sought equipment donations and outside funding to supplement and leverage the College of Natural Sciences Technology Fee.

The Department was awarded funds from the National Science Foundation for two successive years for computing equipment and software. These funds purchased multi-purpose hardware and software and software for research and classroom use.

The Department received a very fast computer on loan from IBM. This RISC 6000 Model 550 computer features 512 Mbytes of RAM and can support a large number of simultaneous users.
