TITLE:    Local Newforms for GSp(4)

ABSTRACT: This talk is about a joint project with
Brooks Roberts (University of Idaho) on the p-adic
representation theory of the group GSp(4). We shall
present a complete theory of local old- and newforms
analogous to the existing theory for the group GL(2).
One of the applications of the GL(2) theory is to
establish a precise relationship between classical
elliptic modular forms and automorphic representations
of GL(2), thereby "embedding" the classical theory
into the Langlands program. Similarly, our theory
provides a link between classical Siegel modular
forms and automorphic representations of GSp(4).
