| November 13 | Holger Kley (CSU) | Some geometric aspects of bilinear forms | Abstract: Let V be a vector space endowed with a bilinear form b. A subspace W of V is isotropic if b(v,w) = 0 for all v and w in W. The goal of this talk is to introduce some of the geometry surrounding vector spaces with symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear forms. In particular, we will discuss varieties of (partial) flags of isotropic subspaces of V, including the so-called Lagrangian Grassmannians. The cohomology of these varieties is interesting and not fully understood, and I'll attempt to make this statement precise. |
